Recognizing (dis)order
reading informal settlements through urban morphology

Although widely studied, informal settlements still face the stigma of “disorder” due to their condition of urban irregularity, a factor that hinders the overcoming of certain vulnerabilities. New interpretations of these territories are needed–ones that go beyond this stigma and propose representations capable of revealing the particular organization of their spatial configuration. This study proposes the construction of a schematic and visual panel that articulates three dimensions of analysis of the urban space of informal settlements, based on an in-depth understanding of the reality of these territories and on the theoretical and methodological framework of urban morphology. The panel functions as a cognitive tool for investigating the urban form of these spaces. The study contributes to the development of methodologies for representing and interpreting the reality of informal settlements through the disciplinary lens of urban morphology.
