Abstract

This article examines the Porto Maravilha project in the city of Rio de Janeiro, its context, port use and its return, when and where legacy projects were embraced or condemned, and the disruptions they caused. It adopts the methodological perspective of urban morphology analysis to discuss the relationships between pre-existing structures and the projects added at different times, which presented multiple scales of intervention across different dimensions. In this work, the city is viewed as a place of intersection of social, economic, cultural, historical, and political processes, revealing intertwining attributes embedded in its landscape. The case study illustrates this approach. The analysis considered the early implementation of this major urban project. The study allowed reflection on the transformation processes that occurred and contributes to an assessment of unforeseen negative impacts and their relationships with the region’s attributes, singularities, and identities.
