Abstract

The present essay investigates the relationship between integration into Global Value Chains (GVCs) and the reallocation of labor across economic sectors, resulting in structural changes. To this end, it tests the hypothesis that integration into GVCs, contributes to the restructuring of economies by increasing the potential of more productive sectors. PMG ARDL models were estimated for 29 countries, primarily developing economies, for the period of 1995 to 2018. To enhance the robustness of the results, Granger and Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality tests were implemented. The empircal findings indicate that all three forms of GVC integration (forward, backward, and total) have positive effects on structural changes. The causality tests support the PMG ARDL models.
