Abstract

This article aims to explore the murder of illustrator Roberto Rodrigues by writer and journalist Sylvia Serafim in 1929 through the lens of the processes of the aestheticization of violence and sensationalism. It analyzes how the media shaped the perception of the crime and the defendant's figure, highlighting the role of the press in constructing narratives that transcend the fact itself, perpetuating a figure that remains dehumanized to this day. Because of the crime, both Sylvia’s and Roberto’s intellectual and artistic productions were forgotten and their biographies reduced to its conditions, respectively, of murderess and martyr. The conclusions point to the complexity of the case, which goes beyond a simple criminal act, highlighting the political instrumentalization of Serafim's figure by both her detractors and even her defenders.
