Maternal health condition and functional performance of children with Congenital Zika Syndrome in day care centers in Recife, Pernambuco/Brazil

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the maternal health condition, the functional performance of children with Congenital Syndrome related to Zika virus infection (SCZ) and to analyze the maternal perception about the insertion of their children in municipal day care centers. Methods: This is an observational and exploratory study of qualitative and quantitative approach between August and December / 2018, including 7 of 11 children enrolled in the municipal school system diagnosed with SCZ. The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0(WHODAS 2.0) and semi-structured interview script for mothers were applied. Regarding children, the Pediatric Disability Assessment Inventory (PEDI) was applied. Results: There was an overload in the activity levels and maternal participation even after the children were inserted in the day care centers. Children with poor functional performance, developmental delays and widespread need for primary caregiver care were found. Maternal reports have identified benefits of insertion in day care centers, but there is still a need for active participation of mothers in childcare and lack of care. structural adaptations, permeating maternal overload. Conclusion: Despite being an epicenter of the SCZ epidemic, with a large number of reported cases, greater strategies for including children in the school system, structural improvements, professional skills and maternal support are necessary.
