CHANGES IN DATA AREA WORK ORGANIZATION: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR A STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE
Abstract
Companies undergo continuous transformations and changes to improve their ability to face the challenges required to serve growing markets in fierce competitiveness. The changes, in particular non-incremental ones, require a critical rethinking about the systems, processes, technologies, people and culture as well as the intelligent integration of all these organizational elements. The evolution of information technology supports an array of features that allows the development of effective information systems tailored to the necessities of decision makers. However, some questions arise: How are information technology areas in firms adjusting to changes which provide them with updated and agile tools in order to help them achieve their strategies? • Is the application of advanced technological resources being accompanied by shifts in the IT area? • Does the professional in the computing area have capacity to deal with the technological requirements and a differentiated attitude required to a strategic performance? Information technology can cause changes in the organization as well as it can go the other way around. This study intends to find the second relationship. This choice is justified because in the literature review conducted to date, there is a paucity of research directed specifically to the analysis of the effects of organizational changes in the computer area. Thus, faced with the challenge of a continuous changing state in companies, we are proposing this problem research: Do the processes of change promoted in companies influence the organization of work in the computing area? Delimiting the variable organizational change in reengineering, downsizing, total quality programs, outsourcing, mergers and acquisitions. The labor organization variable is made up of organizational structure of the IT area, its functions and requirements imposed on its professionals. The overall objective is to analyze the transformations in the work organization in the computing area, resulting from changes promoted by the companies surveyed. Among specific goals these stand out: Analyzing the changes in the IT area role. • Analyzing the changes in the IT area organizational structure. • Checking the change in job structures and functions. • Identifying necessary changes in the requirements of professionals concerning knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to meet the new environmental imperatives. The study's contribution intends to show that the reorganization of the IT area requires attention not only for technological aspects but also for the work organization and training of its professionals, so that the sector may act in a proactive manner, adding value to its stakeholders (interest groups).
