John Milton's Anglo-Italian sonnet cycle: a continuing thematic unity?

Abstract

Scholars have long debated the elusive existence of a unifying theme in the English poet John Milton’s Anglo-Italian sonnets, whose irregular publication (between 1645 and 1673) obscures potential interconnections. Prior studies emphasize political and revolutionary impulses while often disregarding his profound theological commitments. This paper identifies in the classical and theological virtues the dominant motif in terms of thematic relevance in Milton’s baroque-influenced sonnets. Although holding symbolic and structural centrality, these ethical and moral principles are frequently positioned in a tension between worldly and spiritual concerns. This paradoxical dynamic not only assumes symbolic primacy but also exerts structural importance in shaping Milton’s poetic architecture, thereby illuminating a general interpretive framework for the sonnet sequence.
