Architecture for Contemporary Art: Away from Neutrality

Abstract

This article intends to investigate the interaction of contemporary art production with architectural spaces conceived to host it, for the purpose of contributing to the thinking on architectural projects for museums. Two recent exhibitions in Brazil were chosen as case studies: Richard Serra’s show at the IMS of Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and Olafur Eliasson’s show at the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo in 2011. The discussion on the specificity of the exhibition spaces was based on Brian O'Doherty's concept of the "white cube", which calls into question the idea of "neutrality" for the spaces of art. To address the engagement of contemporary art with space since minimalism in the case studies analysis, we considered Rosalind Krauss's thoughts on the crisis of the notion of sculpture and the concept of site-specific according to Douglas Crimp.
