Scope

The objective of this special issue is to advance scholarly research on the interplay between sustainability and strategic management. We encourage submissions that explore the strategic dimensions of sustainability across various contexts, industries, and regions. We welcome theory-driven, empirical, or mixed-method studies that investigate innovative solutions, measurement approaches, and regional adaptations, with a specific focus on Latin American challenges and opportunities.

Background

Strategic management research has long explored how firms develop and implement strategies to create value and achieve competitive advantage. Increasingly, this field is also examining how organizations address broader societal concerns, particularly those related to sustainability (Engert, Rauter, & Baumgartner, 2016. Sustainability has become an essential lens for examining the strategic decisions of firms and other institutions, as they are compelled to align their goals with pressing global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and resource conservation (Rao & Shukla, 2023).

At the core of this transformation is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a comprehensive agenda that outlines pathways for addressing some of the most significant social, environmental, and economic challenges of our time. Strategic management plays a critical role in shaping how firms contribute to these goals, including through the design and implementation of innovative solutions, governance structures, and measurement frameworks (Guarini, Mori, & Zuffada, 2022).

The increasing importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics has further highlighted the need for robust strategies that integrate sustainability into the core of business operations. These metrics not only measure sustainability performance but also guide decision-making processes, enabling organizations to evaluate trade-offs and align their actions with long-term value creation.

Moreover, the diverse regional contexts in which these challenges and solutions unfold underscore the need for localized strategies and insights. Latin America, with its rich natural resources, diverse economies, and unique sociopolitical dynamics, represents a particularly compelling region for examining how sustainability and strategic management intersect.

This special issue seeks to deepen our understanding of the role of strategic management in advancing sustainability goals, with particular attention to innovative practices, measurement methodologies, and regional perspectives. By focusing on these areas, we aim to contribute to the growing body of knowledge that informs both theory and practice in strategic management.

o What are the strategic trade-offs between short-term profitability and long-term sustainability goals?

o What innovative practices are emerging to address sustainability challenges?

o How are firms leveraging ESG metrics to evaluate and guide their strategic initiatives?

o What role does technology play in enabling the measurement and management of sustainability efforts?

3. Regional Focus: Insights from Latin America

o What are the unique sustainability challenges faced by firms operating in Latin America?

o How do sociopolitical and economic dynamics in the region shape strategic approaches to sustainability?

o What lessons can global firms learn from successful Latin American sustainability strategies?

4. Public-Private Partnerships and Policy Interventions

o What role do governments and public agencies play in fostering sustainable strategic management?

o How do public-private partnerships create value in addressing complex sustainability challenges?

o What policies and regulatory frameworks support or hinder the adoption of sustainability-oriented strategies?

5. Strategic Innovation and Competitive Advantage

o How do sustainability initiatives influence firms’ competitive positioning and market entry strategies?

o What strategic innovations have enabled firms to transform sustainability challenges into opportunities?

o How do firms balance collaboration and competition when pursuing sustainability goals?

6. Measuring and Evaluating Strategic Actions

o What are the emerging frameworks for measuring the impact of sustainability strategies?

o How do organizations align their ESG metrics with broader performance indicators?

o What are the limitations and opportunities in current measurement practices?

7. Global Diffusion and Localization of Sustainability Practices

o How do sustainability practices and innovations diffuse across borders?

o What are the challenges and opportunities for local adaptation of global sustainability strategies?

o How do firms navigate tensions between global consistency and local responsiveness?

Theoretical and theoretical-empirical papers will be accepted.

All papers can be submitted in English, Portuguese, or Spanish.

The authors should translate papers accepted in Portuguese, or Spanish into English.

Title: maximum 12 words.

Abstract: minimum 200 and maximum 250 words

Five keywords.

Minimum 7,600 words and maximum 8,400 words, including references.

Contemporary organizations in the context of crises and extreme events
Disasters, accidents, misconduct, and corporate crimes are recurrent organizational phenomena that have serious consequences. Organizational research that generally investigates such phenomena produces recommendations to analyze, measure, and prevent so that damage is minimized; however, crises and extreme events often occur repeatedly. It raises important questions about how organizations, individuals, and society deal with these events, either to change the context in which they occur or to prepare for their impacts.
Based on the understanding that extreme contexts are environments in which “one or more extreme events are occurring or are likely to occur that may exceed the organization's capacity to prevent and result in an extensive and intolerable magnitude of physical, psychological, or material consequences to – or in close physical or psycho-social proximity to – organization members.” (Hannah et al. 2009, p. 898). With this special edition, we encourage submissions that seek to answer the following questions:

How are contemporary organizations dealing with crises and extreme events?
How and what can institutions and society learn from contexts of crisis and extreme events?
How and what can contemporary organizations learn from organizations that operate in extreme contexts?

Possible themes and topics for submission, but not limited to them, include:

Tragedies
Local experiences of collaboration in response to crises and extreme events
